THE SYCAMORE TREE PRESCHOOL

In 1980, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church established The Sycamore Tree Preschool as one of their many ministries.  The preschool is located in the old parsonage next door to the church; this safe, comfortable “home” environment has a positive impact on children.  Renovations to the house, such as a child-sized bathroom and removing walls to provide more open space, have made it ideally suited for preschool use.

The Sycamore Tree Preschool is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of The National Association for the Education of Young Children.

In November 1998 the Sycamore Tree Preschool was selected as an exemplary program in a national search conducted by High/Scope Educational Research Foundation.  In a project endorsed by NAEYC, High/Scope has tried to identify quality programs, which also provide good compensation for staff and affordable care for parents.  We were picked as one of ten programs in several categories (non-profits with various funding levels, Head Start agencies, etc.) in this Program Recognition Project.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY & PROGRAM

Physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual development are all important for a child’s readiness.

Research shows that a child’s ability to develop intellectually during these early years is best served by a balanced program of language, art, music, science, devotional experience, and social activities.  Relying on current knowledge of child development our staff employs developmentally appropriate materials, equipment, and practices throughout the curriculum.  A trained and caring staff is our most important asset.

Our primary goal is to help children expand their interests, abilities, friendships, and independence. As a ministry of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Christian training is presented through music, prayer, stories and discussion.

 SYCAMORE TREE STAFF

Our teachers are experienced preschool instructors with special training in Early Childhood Education.  All are members of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and its state and local affiliates.

We are an Evangelical Lutheran Education Association (ELEA) member school, and as part of their continuing education, the staff participates in workshops and annual Washington AEYC and Northwest Lutheran Early Childhood Education Conferences.
